    FOOD PRODUCT PACKAGING PACKAGE The present invention relates to a perishable food packaging that has a rigid or semi-rigid bottom shell and a flexible upper portion for storing a perishable food product therein. The food product can be vacuum sealed with a first layer of film, such as an inner film layer inside the tray. The vacuum-sealed food product can be sealed tightly so that any loose particles of the food can be prevented from moving during storage and transportation. The tray can then be sealed in an opening by a second layer of film, such as an outer layer. A space filled with gas is present between the first and second layers of film and can assist in conserving the freshness of the food product and minimize or avoid damage to the product. Additionally, the packaging may have support features positioned on the outside of the packaging that help to support the packaging in an upright position.

    Invention Patent Descriptive Report for "METHOD AND PACKAGING FOR PACKAGING FOOD PRODUCTS". Field This order relates generally to a flexible top package 5 and a rigid bottom for a food product and, in particular, to a package configured to pack the food product in it.
    Background The packaging of food products, and particularly chilled or frozen pizzas, can be designed to protect pizza 1O from impacts during shipping and handling.
    This is typically accomplished by placing a cardboard insert against an underside of the pizza.
    A flexible outer film wrapper is formed to surround the cardboard insert and the pizza to keep the insert generally in place against the pizza.
    In a type of pizza packaging, the outer film wrapper is the only other outer packaging.
    Although it is a low-cost packaging, it can be desirable for several reasons.
    First, the sides and top of the pizza have no protection, thereby potentially exposing them to breakage or other damage during shipping and handling.
    Second, it may be desirable to print graphics or nutritional information on the outer wrap, as the outer wrap may deform during wrapping, resulting in an uneven surface not suitable for pre-printed graphics.
    Instead, in this type of pizza packaging, graphics or nutritional information can be printed on a paper that is inserted or on the bottom of the packaging, between the insert and the outer wrapper, or on the top of the packaging, between the top surface. of the pizza and the outer wrapper.
    It may be desirable to have to provide separate paper separately.
    In another type of pizza packaging, the pizza, the cardboard insert and the outer film wrapper are placed in a secondary packaging, often a carton or carton.

    Claims (17)

    1. Food product packaging comprising: a rigid tray (12) that has a lower wall (16) and an upright side wall (18) ending in a flange (24) that extends over the periphery of the wall lateral (18), the lower wall and the upright side wall defining an interior of the tray (12) and the lower wall has a plurality of raised protuberances (48); a food product (44) arranged inside the tray (12) and supported by the plurality of raised protuberances (48), the 1st food product (44) having a substantially flat bottom surface, a side surface and an upper surface with a plurality of displaceable upper layers, the raised protuberances (48) being effective in protecting the lower surface of the food product (44); said packaging being characterized by the fact that it comprises: a first layer of flexible film (40) vacuum-sealing the food product (44) to the tray (12) and restricting the movement of the upper displaceable layers, the first layer being flexible film (40) comes into contact with the top surface and at least a portion of the side surface of the food product (44), the first layer of film (40) forming a peelable heat seal with flange (24) of the tray; a second layer of flexible film (42) positioned on the tray (12) and the first layer of flexible film (40) and sealed to the first layer of film (40) with a permanent coextensive seal with detachable hot-dip between the first layer of flexible film (40) and the flange (24) of the tray (12), the second layer of flexible film (42) being spaced from the first layer of flexible film (40) into the flange of the tray with a gas layer (52) between them effective to protect the top surface of the food product.

    2. Packaging according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the tray 12 includes at least one support base (236) of the side wall (18) that
    • extends outward from adjacent portions of the side wall at a distance less than an outer peripheral edge (28) of the flange (24) immediately adjacent to the support base (236), with the support base and the flange cooperate to support the packaging in an upright orientation.

    3. Packing according to claim 2, characterized by the fact that the outer peripheral edge (28) immediately adjacent to the flange (24) has a linear segment.

    4. Packaging according to claim 3, characterized by the fact that the tray (12) includes at least one support base (30) of the 1st lower wall (16) configured to rest on the flange of a similar packaging (1 O) when stacked on top of the similar packaging in a horizontal position.

    5. Packaging according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the tray (12) includes a plurality of ribs (50) extending outwardly from the side wall (18) to protect the side surface of the food product (44).

Packaging, according to claim 5, characterized by the fact that: the total area of the ribs (50) of the side wall (18) of the tray that are contactable by the side surface of the food product (44) is lower than 20 the total area of the side wall (18) that is not accessible by the side surface of the food product due to the ribs in the side wall; and the total area of the protrusions (48) of the lower wall (16) of the tray (12) that are contactable by the lower surface of the food product (44) is less than the total area of the lower wall (16) that is not contactable 25 the bottom surface of the food product due to the protuberances of the bottom wall.

Packaging, according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that: the first layer of film (40) is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, low density polyethylene (LOPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) , ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA), ethyl vinyl alcohol (EVOH), polypropylene and combinations thereof; the second layer of film (42) is air impermeable and selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET), polyester and combinations thereof; and 30 the tray (12) is selected from the group consisting of polyester, polypropylene, high impact polystyrene (HIPS), high density polyethylene (HOPE), amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET), and combinations thereof .

    14. Packaging, according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the food product is a pizza product (44).

Packaging according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the side wall (18) of the tray (12) has at least one recess that extends outwards (32) dimensioned to facilitate access to a portion of the side surface of the food product (44) for removing the food product from the tray (12) after the second and the first layer of films (40, 42) have been removed.
